In the article, the general aim is to study on some programs which can help second language learners by giving them opportunity to communicate with native speakers of the target language thanks to audio and video interaction, and the user needs and preferences are kept in view. The emphasis is on tandem language learning.
SCMAC programs offer three types of communication environments. These are instant messaging, conferences, and chat groups. Their functions are briefly mentioned in the article. Other than these, exploring free SCMAC programs for second language learners in order to enable them to communicate with native speakers of their target language is aimed. The selected programs for this aim are AOL Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, MSN
Messenger, Windows Messenger, PalTalk, and iVisit. The first instant messaging program is AOL Instant Messenger. It has two different handled versions, and these are Version 4.8.2790 for Windows (95, 98, 2000, NT, XP) and Version 4.3.1232 for Macintosh (OS 8, OS 9). Yahoo Messenger is another program which is used in there different environments consisting of instant Message, Conference, and Chat Room. MSN Messenger is of high quality with excellent audio capability, and Windows Messenger has all the features of MSN Messenger plus in addition to its extra capabilities. PalTalk arouses attention by second language learners and teachers, and it has a feature of adult control for their children. As for iVisit, it is different from the other programs which are dealt with in terms of its features. For example, it uses a multiparty peer-to-peer architecture, and it does not have a typical sign-in feature. In conclusion, these programs are all useful for second language learners whose preferences differ are different.
