Summary of Communities of Practice

What is inferred about the definition of communities of practice from the text is that communities of practice means a group of people doing something together by aiming the same things and communicating each other. However, there are some criteria which hinder to call every group of people as communities of practice and cause to call them as just communities. In order to call a group as community of practice, three characteristics should be combined in it. These characteristics are the domain, the practice, and the community as it seen in the text. In order to practice in a group, some activities such as problem solving, seeking experience, and discussing developments should be realized.
In the text, it is emphasized that the initial and main use of the term called communities of practice take place in learning theory. As it is a common concept because of its functionality, it is possible to see communities of practice in different social areas such as business, organizational design, government etc. For example, people in organizations should be organized in a group and work together so as to manage knowledge, so they constitute communities of practice. In the similar way, people in government also should be together in order to make decisions and solve problems. To sum up, communities of practice are common all around the world unavoidably.
