3. WHAT ABOUT EGO4U?
The website http://www.ego4u.com/ is easy to use for both students and teachers because the titles, sub-titles and categories are well-organized in an order. All the expressions and statements in the website are clear and comprehensible. As the website do not include very complexly animated images and videos, a high-tech computer and high video memory specification is not needed. High speed connection is of course effective in reaching the targeted links quickly and enabling faster learning; however, it is not essential because of the simple and plain features and content of the website. In order to get benefit from the website, it is not necessary to download and program to the computer. The only things to download from the website are PDF documents of some exercises and extra information. A webcam is not needed in any part of the website. A head set is also not needed very much as there are very few listening activities.
The website http://www.ego4u.com/ is benefited from mostly by students because most of the activities and examples are prepared especially to learn English rather than teach English. As for the English level of the students, the website is suitable for both the beginners and the advanced ones because of the exercises in different levels and large scale information from simple to complex. The people who want to learn English grammar, daily English, English culture or business English can get high benefit from the website. It is also beneficial for the young learners of English thanks to its colorful images and games. In addition to students, teachers can also get benefit from the website while teaching English culture, preparing worksheets etc. However, there is not very much opportunity for teacher because the part for the teachers is a bit limited.
4. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF EGO4U
Ego4u is a website which is good at enhancing English language learning with its both strengths and weaknesses in terms of effectiveness.
4.1. Advantages of ego4u
4.1.1. Advantages for students
First of all, the grammar subjects are well-prepared with their explanations, tables, diagrams, and examples. The students can understand the grammar subjects which are dealt with separately thanks to clear instructions of the website, and they can practice with the tests and exercises in the website. There are different exercises for each grammar subject, which provides better instruction for the students. It is also effective that the tenses which can be confused by the students are handled separately. In the writing part, almost every key points and important information are included, so the website is very effective to improve the students’ writing skills. Categories used in the writing part are very common and have broad validity in everyday situations and academic environment. Vocabulary part of the website gives beneficial information especially for everyday communication, which can result in the students’ fluency in English. It is also beneficial for the students to give easily confused words, which is a general problem of EFL students. Vocabulary exercises are effective in terms of faster memorization of the words. The website includes tests in different levels, and this is very advantageous because it is possible to address to larger mass of students. Moreover, the tests are very clear and help the students to practice more and more. Some study tips are included in the website, and they are very important for the students which aim to learn English faster and better. Daily English part is also effective in terms of attracting the students’ attention with an interesting subject which helps improving their English. Information about English speaking countries and culture of them are one of the most important things included in the website because it is not very logical to learn a language by ignoring its culture, and language and culture are inseparable concepts. It is good idea to give top stories of the latest news in the website because it can draw attention and lead the students to read more. Articles concerning some parts of business English are also appealing and informative for the students. Games, riddles, and quizzes are very enjoying and useful, which can arouse the students’ interest in English. They are beneficial especially for young children. E-cards are also enjoying, and increase creative imagination of the students in English while building their own e-card with the options of the website. Newsletter and calendar are also beneficial for continuous interest in the website and in English. Thanks to the suggestion board, the students write their opinions and share their ideas, so it is a bit advantageous part of the website. In general, the website is effective and broad in terms of explanations, examples, and exercises for the students who try to learn English.
4.1.1. Advantages for teachers
The website is not very advantageous for the teachers because of limited extent of the subject. After all, teaching materials related to English culture can be used effectively by the teachers during the lessons. Moreover, the tips for English lessons, the worksheet samples, and the mentioned game can be also applied in the lessons. The teacher can get the highest benefit from this website thanks to teacher’s board in which they can share their ideas and experiences by communicating many other English teachers.
4.2. Disadvantages of ego4u
4.2.1. Disadvantages for students
Although almost all types of English grammar subjects are given clearly with examples, there can be more examples with more images, which can result in enthusiasm of the students. Vocabulary part seems a bit beneficial; however, broader vocabulary of more various word categories can be given with images which help to memorize the words more easily. Animals and sports part is very limited in terms of the subjects dealt with. If there are more types of animals and sports with their explanation, more images, and more exercises, it can be very attracting for the students. Literature part is also very limited. The literature topics are well-selected, but there can be more topics of interesting books, appealing poems, and famous writers with more information. It is an effectiveness of the website to give place to business English, because the students or adult learners of business world can get benefit from this part, especially in their formal writings. This part is also a guide for basic communication in business English which takes place in some areas. Business English part is quite effective, but it is limited, too. There can be more examples for spoken business English in addition to written English. Chat with Egon can be very enjoying for the learners, especially for the young ones. However, it can be disadvantageous because it is just a virtual chat, and there is a big possibility that the computer can give indifferent or absurd answers to the questions, which can result in false input in communication skills for the students. In addition to these, the website can be better if it deals with more language skills. For example, it can be better if the website include a listening part which include different listening activities such us songs, articles, poems etc. It can be also effective to include some videos of English lessons, daily activities, and formal communication samples.
4.2.2. Disadvantages for teachers
There can be more subjects which the teachers can use in their English lessons in addition to cultural studies subject. Moreover, the website can include lesson plans and teaching activities. The teachers may get benefit from the parts for the students by using the examples and activities there. To sum up, the website is not very preferable and advantageous for the teachers because of its limitedness.
